Los angeles guy here with a 3.5" refractor and a 10" dob who has never been to pinos before. Can someone give me some basic info, mainly my question is...can I camp there? I have a pop up trailer that my wife and my 2 small daughters and I love. I would love to combine a little camping trip with some great viewing! I was working out that way 2 days ago and I notice that the mountains are pretty snow covered right now. is the place even open? Let me know..thanks smile

10"dob question

My Orion 10" dob lost a nut on the inside of the ota that holds one of the bolts in place on the altitude mechanism. This bolt is pretty much exactly halway down the tube...how am I supposed to fix this? I'm very hesitant about yanking the primary or secondary mirror off but I guess I'm going to have to. How hard is going to be to collimate the primary if I pull it? Thanks

Moving to a 10" meade from a 10" dob

Moved from a 3.5" refractor to a 10" dob that I love very much. Next move I'm looking at is the RX200 10" Meade. I realize that this is going to enable me to start exploring astrophotography and the goto features will be pretty cool on top of Pinos where there are so many stars it's alitttle disconcerting. But a friend told me the seeing won't be much different from my 10" dob....is that true my 10" dob is 1250mm f4.5 while the 10" SCT is 2500mm f10. Seems to be the seeing is going to be tremendously better. Would love to hear your opinions. Thanks

TScopes 14"

Looking to move up from my 10" dob but want to stay fairly portable. Ed Taychert's 14" TScope looks like the perfect answer for good quality,lightweight and a great price. Just looking for anybody's thoughts on this scope and any recommendations such as; plate glass vs pyrex, is the Swayze mirror worth the extra $$'s, standard focuser vs Moonlite.
Love to here from any Tscopes owners.

NOSS at Palomar on 6/25

I saw the NOSS satellites overhead at Palomar on June 25 2005 between 10 and 10:30.
I had no idea what they were at the time, looked like a whole constellation travelling across the sky....3 stars moving uniformly across the sky.
Freaked me out at the time and it wasn't till I got back home and was able to ask some people from Los Angeles Astronomical Club what they were till I got my answer.
Pretty cool thing to see..especially since the Navy says they don't existsmile

Thanks for all the helpful insight. I think you talked me out potentially spending a lot of money. I just have to decide how important doing photography is to me. I think I'd rather have the aperture so I'll probably start looking for the 15"-18" dobs...big but still portable...kinda smile
