Trekerscopes

Posted By Steve Misterek

I would like to hear from everyone that has or knows where one of these scopes might reside. Made in the 30's through 50s. I know of two, one in Spokane WA and the other half in Montana. Are there any more out there.

Coating disaster

Posted By Steve Misterek

I sent my Telescopics Classical Casegrain mirror set to Newport Glass Works to be recoated in time for the Mars opposition. It came back today with chips and terrible scaring from one end of the mirror to the other- leaving it totally useless. At first I thought it was someone elses mirror. I called them and they said there was some kind of reaction with the glass. My question is- Is there anything I can do, I have been working on this scope for two years and all I needed was new coatings to make it complete. I can't believe it AAAAGGH! The picture provide is the mirror before sending it to be recoated.

Sincerely, Steve the sad guy

coating disaster pic 3

Posted By Steve Misterek

Here is the original picture of the disc before coating. Notice the dark stripe on the side with the writing just to the right of it. Picture two shows after coating disaster.
This cannot be just bubbles in the mirror - the etching followed the writing on the side of the mirror.

Thanks for your input everyone!

Sincerely, Steve M

coating disaster good news

Posted By Steve Misterek

About a month or so ago I posted pictures of a coating disaster that ended in a ruined Cassegrain set. Newport Glass is replacing the complete optical set at no additional cost. It is nice to see this company taking this professional approach to solving this problem.

I want to thank everyone for putting their two cents in, it helped very much.

Enterprise Optics

Posted By Steve Misterek

I have been waiting for 8 months for a promised 12.5 inch Cassegrain optical set. Does any one have an idea how long it takes to get a mirror from Enterprise Optics. Ed Beck is not returning phone calls. Getting nervous.

Sincerely, Steve Misterek

Priming/Painting aluminum tube?

Posted By Steve Misterek

Hi Mike. I received a 50 inch by 16" id x 1/8" thick tube from the fabricator. I had them ground the weld off and fill in pin holes along the weld by spot welding. I then used a crafstman 3d sander to smooth out the weld. I called around town to find a small powdercoating shop that did runs of white on other products. For $30.00 the tube was sand blasted and powdercoated a brilliant white. below is the before picture. and I will post the after picture on the next post.

Results of my Discovery PDHQ mirror Ronchi test

Posted By Steve Misterek

I have a 12.5 inch F16 classical cass. Before I push it out for viewing, I use my 8 inch F7 Discovery dob to see if the viewing is worthy of the Cassegrain. If I can max out the 8 incher - which is quite difficult then I am ready for the F16. The 8 incher does very well against the Meade dobs and always edges past them in performance. It is not your imagination, the people at Discovery do a good job and the price is right. 8)
