need info on old meade scope

Posted By Tim LeVane

I traded asome tools for this scope/mount/box, its a sears Discover model no 3 4454, F12 80mm made in japan, the tripod is wood, very nice construction on the tube and mount. Its in really good shape just needed cleaning. the man I got it from was the second ownerand it had been siting unsed in storage the last 10 years. the focuser is really long and seems to use very small Ep's an inch maybe? it came with 6 ep'sranging from 22mm to 3.5 I think. Any way to replace the whole thing or adapt it to 1.25? or would it be best just to use as is?

Small apo or large achro?

Posted By Tim LeVane

I plan on buying a new or (used if I find the right scope)refractor, for an apo I have been looking at the vixen ED80Sf 80 on the porta mount. For the large achro I was thinking of maybe the 5 or even 6 inch meade on the LXD75 mount.

I own a small mak, the orion 102mm and a Televu pronto I plan on keeping the Pronto and selling off the mak. The Pronto feels like a work of art and
I just cant bring myself to ever part with it.

I know the Vixen is only a small step up in terms of apature but it seems ideal for fast sky sweeping. And I often find myself running outside for a fast look. My kids and or wife often tag along,so have another scope thats fast and easy to set up is a bouns.

On the other hand Having a large scope would be just great! Help I am lost in limbo on this, Any sugestions or tips?

What is an ED scope really?

Posted By Tim LeVane

Are scopes with ED glass apos or just really good achromats?

The scope market seems to be flooded with terms from semi APO to semi ED.

Newcomers such as myself are over whelmed when trying to make an informed choice on what to buy.

thinking of selling pronto

Posted By Tim LeVane

I just bought a Vixen ED80sf and I am very happy with it, so happy in fact I dont think I need two small scopes now. I am thinking of selling my TV pronto but not sure how much to ask for it. I would just be selling the ota sans 90 diag and the carrying case. whats a fair price range? I paid around 600 in cash and trade for it last year.

Vixen 135SD Sx trim vs Orion Spaceprobe 130 ?

Posted By Tim LeVane

I was thinking of picking up a smaller newt again, I have a Vixen ed80sf refractor which I really love.I really enjoy small telescopes.I decided that a 5 inch Newt might be just the thing for me to get next. I have read some nice reviews of both the orion 130 and 130ST but have been unable to find any on the Vixen 135. pros and cons of each? I know that the Vixen is almost twice the cost as the Orions. How much nicer are the Vixens?

Achromatic lens coatings?

Posted By Tim LeVane

I see that many of the better achromats like Vixen have coatings on the objective lens. How durable are these coatings with normal use? Do they need to be recoated after a few years? How much effect do these coatings have overall on the scopes performance?

Rating for being helpful?

Posted By Tim LeVane

Quite a few times folks have responded to one of my classifieds not to buy or sell but just to pass on very helpful information. Would giving them a rating for being helpful be Ok? Or should I just say thanks in an email?

Orion Expanse for everyday use?

Posted By Tim LeVane

I was thinking of picking up the set of four Orion Expanse EP for everyday use around the kids, how do folks like these as compared to the Orion sirius Plossls?

My main scope is a 80mm vixen and soon I will have a 4 inch vixen as well. I do plan on slowly picking up a few nicer ones like the Orion stratus or some TV EP over the next few years
