12.5 f/5 R.F Royce vs 12.5 f/5 Discovery Primary M

Posted By Paul Neesam

I would love to get some feedback on mirror quality and any comparison you can provide on these two mirrors head to head. I'm at a point in my project where I need to purchase a mirror. I'm building an open truss GEM mounted f/5 Newtonian.

Thanks Paul

David H. Levy (born 1948) a Canadian astronomer

Anyone know Davids email address or know what scopes he uses in his garage? I just saw a Discovery Channel special with him on it. Would love to know what product he uses. Icluding the software he uses to track astroids.

Thanks

Building a binoscope

Posted By Paul Neesam

I've been researching on the internet how to build a binoscope from a couple of 100-120mm ED or APO OTA's. I'm looking for any feedback, links and pictures. I'm attempting to find the bottom ends like those made by Tatsuro Matsumoto. I've emailed his site but no response yet. I'm also giving series consideration to a nice set of Oberwerk BT120, they seem really nice.

Thanks in advance...

Eye Concerns Viewing Full Moon

Posted By Paul Neesam

Should there be a concern viewing a full moon through a large scope with out using a moon filter? I'm about ready to start using a 12.5 inch and don't want to damage my eyes. Once before I viewed a full moon with a 10 inch and noticed my eyes hurt for a few days afterword, they felt like they had been in windy conditions, kind of dry and tender. Best to get feedback from those with more experience. I have not read anything or seen anything about this issue. I do have a moon filter...

Thanks in advance...

Need help what are the best eyepieces for an f/5

Posted By Paul Neesam

I recently completed a project, a 12.5-inch OMI mirror (Newton). After collimation (laser) it worked great on the moon but marginal on planets. While looking at Jupiter and it's moons they were just blurry, stars are just slightly blurry,(which may be normal). I could barley make out the color bands on Jupiter, i'm expecting much more performance. I was using 15mm & 23mm 1.25 FMC eyepieces, a binoviewer with an adapter.

What are the best eyepieces to use with an F/5? I like planets and faint fuzzes. Thanks in advance.

Wanted Remote Control Equipment

Posted By Paul Neesam

I'm interested in going remote control on two pieces of equipment and need your help. The equipment is a G-11 and a CPC 1100 mount.I'm interested in remoting video & control to a computer screen about 100 feet away. The CPC 1100 mount has a binoscope mounted so here my question includes, is it possible to remote control & video from a twin tube setup? What equipment is out there, what is the best equipment and what is the best and proper installation method, all help is appreciated...thanks in advance.

Primary Mirror Suppliers

Posted By Paul Neesam

Looking for your help, why is it so hard to get a mirror supplier to return emails about their products, one site did not even have a way to contact them? Maybe its me, don't know, maybe business is soooo good they don't need any more business. It is driving me kind of nuts... I've sent emails out to maybe 10 suppliers looking for a good quality 16-inch f/4 prmary, received two responses from two excellent suppliers, thats only a 20% response. Not really a way to make money...thanks!

F/4 with bino & powermate or f/5

Posted By Paul Neesam

I'm building a 16 inch GEM mount and was intending to build it with an f/4.2 mirror & use a bino for DSO. My thoughts were to use a 1.5 or 2.0 powermate for planets (and of course the bino). Am I on track or just NUTS? Any other advice is welcome. I'm attempting to build it as light as possible.

Thanks Paul
