Thinking hard about going to the Sagamon (spelling?) star party in central Illinois instead of Astrofest. The darker skies, and no religious pretext for proper scheduling, is making this new alternative a far more attractive option for me.

For many, this seems like the right thing to do.

Hey Fellas...

I'm in the process of buying a medium power (15-18mm) wide angle eyepiece. I'd like to get the Nagler 17mm, however the price point of the Meade 18mm UWA is awfully enticing. Does anyone have any experience out there with this new Meade EP, and more specifically, compared it to the 17mm Nagler? Any sincere, truly unbiased reviews would be greatly appreciated.

Ahhhh, now that IS allot of scopes! Problem is that how REALLY different are the images in all those scopes?

I realize that this is a hobby, and multiple scope acquisition is perfectly acceptable, but do you really expect to see a significant difference in image quality in terms of RESOLUTION?

This is only my observation, but I see this as a common trait that quite a few refractor owners display. The seemingly endless quest to find the "holy grail" of refractors that will magically produce that awe inspiring, nearly devine like image. Unfortunately, it always appears that the currently owned, small refractor never quite achieves this goal; hence the next new refractor acquisition.

Unfortunately, (for some that is) the image many are looking for can only be acheived through one thing: APERTURE. For visual usage only one thing can acheive this. The large, highly corrected, optimized, NEWTONIAN today is still the only instrument that can do this. (for mere mortal folk that is) One view of Saturn through any 14-20" Newt. at 500+X will forever change the hearts and minds of ANY, truly neutral observer.

I'm going to be doing the Prarie Skies party instead of the new Astrofest. I too have been going to A/fest for over a decade and have come to look forward to the event. Its truly sad that this all had to take place, but in the end what I enjoy about Astrofest the most IS it's location. Sure, I would like darker skies, but I do plenty of dark sky observing on my own, and don't really miss it that much at camp Shaw. Besides, Vana's (the afest location) is only about 6-10 miles away from Camp Shaw...I doubt the skies are all that much darker.

I'm sorry, but CAS's idea to hold a star party in the middle of a farmer's field sounds ridicules. Camp Shaw has the best amenities for such an event. Amentities like SHOWERS, flush toilets for the more serious rest room breaks, buildings to hang out in if it rains, a cool canyon, etc. The decision in my mind is a no-brainer; Camp Shaw-wan-na-see all the way!
