Advice on Lx90

Posted By Joe Moskowitz

Looking to buy my first scope. I have an oppertunity to buy a 10 mo. old, 8" LX90, with EQ wedge, Pelican case and LPI for $1500. Does this sound like a good deal for this scope? I was also wondering if the LNT feature on the new version of this scope makes it worth looking at a new one.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Orion or Celestron Barlow

Posted By Joe Moskowitz

I'd like to get a decent, inexpensive barlow. Any opinions about the differences between the folowing two: Celestron 2X Barlow Lens 1-1/4 Ultima or the Orion Shorty-Plus 2x 3-Element Barlow. Specs look similar for both.

Thanks,

Image settings

Posted By Joe Moskowitz

I will be trying out my new Orion Starshoot this weekend for the first time with an lx90 8in., mounted on a wedge. It will be at a fairly dark site in South Florida. For Deep Space objects, say m42, how may exposures and for what duration should I start out with. Is there some way to calculate these settings, or is it pretty much hit or miss? My other question is, with the Maxim DL software can I slew the scope without using the paddle.

Thanks,

CCD focusing

Posted By Joe Moskowitz

This may seem like a simple issue, but it has me stuck. When I remove my eyepiece and put in my new(and first), CCD camera (Orion Starshoot)in my lx90 8 in., the object is always way out of focus. I just can't seem to figure out which way to turn the focus knob to get the image in focus. The same thing happens with Bino's so I expect the answer will be the same. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

LX90 and 80ED Apo

Will a Meade LX90 8 inch on the fork mount support an Orion 80ED apo piggy backed for astrophotography?

Thank you,

Atlas Eq-g Polar alignment scope problem

Posted By Joe Moskowitz

I just got an Atlas Eq-g mount with the Orion 11"SCT. When I look through the polar axis finder scope I am unable to see any Polaris, or any other stars due to the illuminator being so bright. Short of taking the mount apart(shudder), is there any way to tone down the intensity of the light.
Thanks in advance,

Joe Moskowitz

Confused again, naturally!

Posted By Joe Moskowitz

I am in the market for an 80mm APO. i have narrowed the choices down to three, the Orion ED 80, The Meade Series 5000 80 mm ED APO. or the W/O ZenithStar 80 II ED. The scope will be mounted directly on an Atlas EQ-G or piggy-backed on the Orion XLT 11" SCT. It will be used primarily for astrophotography of DSO's, maybe some planetary use. Does the short focal length, 480mm, of the Meade rule it out for planetary use? Beyond that it almost seems like a toss up between the three. Any help with this dilemma would be greatly appreciated.

Zenithstar 80 ED II Focusing problem

Posted By Joe Moskowitz

Tried out the new scope last night for the first time. I was using a 1.25" diagonal. I tried a Nagler 13 and a Meade 6-24 zoom lens. With the focuser racked all the way out I still could not get a sharp image with either eyepiece. It seemed like it needed just another quarter turn of the knob. Any suggestions would be helpful.

(I'll also post this on the refractor forum).

Thanks,
