Posted By Jay Martin

Can any out there please give me some feed back on the reputation/quality of the APM truss telescopes with the BVD glass mirrrors? They are an Astromart sponser, but I can't seem to find any review of there truss telescopes.
Thanks.

Night vision scope for telescope viewing

Posted By Jay Martin

Has anybody out there attempted using one of those monocular night vision scopes (you can get one for under $300) to enhance viewing on a telescope? I know that a company makes a producted call I 3 which uses night vision technology to enhance viewing, but its product isn't cheap.
(a couple thousand) Seems to me one could adapt on of those cheaper night vision scopes to get the same result? Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks.

Outer planets amateur viewing

Posted By Jay Martin

Doing some research on viewing Uranus and I came across this interesting web page: http://www.ipoc.net/ (click on Uranus, than go to Uranus drawings). Posted by some folks in Germany who apparently have done some observations of Uranus
with modest telescopes 10 to 16 inch over several nights. They then drew what they saw. What is interesting is they compare the drawings to what the Hubble scope shows on the web site. The drawings aren't that far off. Amazing. Just goes to show what an amatuer can still accomplish with patient. Has any one else had this type of success at Uranus or Neptune?
Happy holidays.

She's big, black, and beautiful!

Posted By Jay Martin

Well I finally got my brand new 15 inch reflector from Discovery. I am still trying to recover from my initial shock of the size of her! I went from a 10 inch to a 15 inch and having never actually seen a 15 inch before I am in awe of her. (I new the measurements but they just didn't do it justice). It looks like I am going to have to use a small foot stool for straight up and down looking.
Anyone else own one of these lovely black ladies? Please let me know how it has done for you or any advice for a
15 inch newbie owner. Thanks.

Focus Problem - any suggestions?

Posted By Jay Martin

Hello,
I am having trouble with my Crayford focuser on my
Discovery telescope. I recently replaced the secondary mirror. The focuser now doesn't come in focus. It almost does though. The problem is it doesn't go into the scope
far enough to focus. Any suggestions? Do I need to
adjust my primary up/down?
Thanks.

Equatorial platforms for dobsonian

Posted By Jay Martin

Hello,
I am interested in building or purchasing an equatorial platform for my dobsonian. Can anyone give me any information on resources for building a dual axis equatorial platform? Is a dual axis necessary for photography or will a single axis work?
I plan on taking shorter exposures -less than 3 minutes with my digital camera. Any information will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Digital Setting Circles for Discovery Problems

Posted By Jay Martin

Hello,
I am installing a digital setting circle set on a Discovery 14 inch dob. I ordered the kit from Discover. I am having trouble with the bottom encoder. It seems (not sure) that the bolt it goes in slips when I turn the mount. I have tried tightening it, but when I do this it is so tight it is tough to turn the mount. Has anyone else installed these digital setting circles and encountered problems? Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks.

Beginner Solar filter recommendation

Posted By Jay Martin

I couldn't find much on this so thought I would ask.
Does anyone have a recommendation on what would be the best beginner inexpensive solar filter - say below $250 or- for a Celestron 8 inch CPC telescope. I know virtually little about this aspect of the hobby but I am interested in doing this. It seems that these filters can be very expense. Any help or recommendations will be great. Thanks.
