First autoguided images - M13 and M51

Posted By Eric Houby

I've been lurking on this forum for about a year gaining a lot of insight into deep sky imaging. A week or so ago I finally finished acquiring all the equipment I needed for autoguiding and wanted to share the results.

These images were taken through a C8 at about f/4 with an Atik 16IC-Color. Guiding was with a SV Nighthawk using a DSI. I used five minute subs with a total time of 30 minutes on M13 and 50 minutes on M51. I wanted to go much longer on M51 but the clouds had other plans.

Guiding went well on the Dec axis but I had motion of a couple of pixels on the RA. I'll need to take some time to figure out how to tune that out.

Thanks for looking and suggestions are appreciated!

M27 - SV Nighthawk

Posted By Eric Houby

Thanks to everyone that helped me with suggestions on correcting the auto-guiding problems I experienced during my first attempts at it last month. I can't say that I've worked through it completely but I have made some progress. It seems I didn't have enough weight on the east side and adding more helped a bit.

I did not like what the Meade f/3.3 focal reducer did to the shape of the stars in my previous images so I changed things up a bit to experiment. :-) For this picture of M27 I guided through my C8 and imaged through my SV Nighthawk II.

22x5 minute exposures
ATIK16IC color
Nighthawk II - 80mm f6

I assume the large size of the bright stars is an indication that I need an IR filter... Is that correct?

Thanks!

Between work and clouds it has been over a month since I've been able to take the telescope out. Last Friday I finally had an opportunity to play with my new (to me) SV105. I didn't intend to do any imaging but at 3AM I saw Orion's sword rise above my neighbor's roof and couldn't resist.

Thanks for looking and any comments.

NGC7331 and friends

Posted By Eric Houby

Sue French's article in the November issue of S&T motivated me to image NGC7331. Last night I got in 2 hours of exposure time and this is what I came up with. I can see that I need much more time and hope to get more data soon.

Thanks for looking and any suggestions/comments are appreciated.

I recently replaced my ATIK 16IC color with a QSI 516ws and just "finished" processing this image. It is my first color image taken with a monochrome camera so I still have much to learn but I'm happy with the results. With the completion of a small backyard observatory I now hope to get much more imaging time with the 516. grin I have yet to process data I've collected of M1 and the horse head nebula and will post them once completed.

Another Rosette...

Posted By Eric Houby

A few "technical" glitches delayed the start of my imaging session and I only got two 15 minute exposures of the Rosette before it went behind a tree. This was a test of a Ha filter I just picked up and I'm a bit surprised how good it turned out considering the limited exposure time I have.

Thanks for taking a look.

The same night I imaged the Rosette I got three hours of RGB data on M108 and M97.

M51 in Ha

Posted By Eric Houby

I finally had the time and good weather to image but the moon was full so I used the Ha filter on this one. My hope is to add RGB data over the next couple of weeks as time permits. I did the processing on my laptop while on an airplane so I hope it looks ok....

4.5 hours of Ha with a QSI-516 and a SV105.
