8-inch GEMs- recommendations?

Posted By Rich Russin

I am new to the equipment but have gained a lot of experience in the last year. I was very pleasently surprised by the view in my C6N- Advanced series Newtonian. In thinking of moving up to an 8-inch, I had some questions. The reason for 8 is portability- I find 10 simply too large. I prefer the GEM as well.

1- Is there a real difference in the view between the Schmidt-Newtonions by Meade and the Advanced series by Celestron?

2- Are there other brands/models I should consider?

I know these questions give away my skill-level, but I am learning. What I am trying to do is avoid reinventing the wheel, or telescope in this case by listening to the advice of the experienced, and perhaps opinionated.

Thanks, Rich

Sony Nex-7 and live-view

Posted By Rich Russin

With a Canon 60D , a T-ring adapter, and a mini HDMI cable it is possible to output the view to an HDTV. Does anyone have any experience doing this with the Sony Nex series cameras, especially the Nex -7?

SONY Nex 6 or Nex 7 Live View

Posted By Rich Russin

Does anyone know for certain if either the SONY Nex 6 or Nex 7 has live view? Specifically I am interested in the live view whereby your live output is visible on an external monitor similar to Canon DSLR's. The live-view feature in the instruction manual is not the same thing.

Buy new 'Made in China' or older 'Made in USA'

Posted By Rich Russin

I have settled on the C9.25 as my compromise crossover visual/imaging scope. My understanding is that production shifted from the USA to China for these scopes. I am hoping someone with experience with both versions can share their opinion on which is better, if there is a difference at all. In other words, do I buy a new 'Made in China' or older 'Made in USA' I am also curious as to copy-to-copy differences. I.E. what are the odds of getting a bad copy new?
