Astroscan or Starblast

Posted By Don Kacmar

Hello! I'm the father of a budding 5 year old astronomer. All she wants for Christmas is a telescope. I've done a bunch of research, including reviewing the threads in this forum, but I can't decide between the Orion Starblast and the Edmund Astroscan. For me, it's the history, mystique and child-friendliness of the Astroscan (and the shape/red color -- which we all know a 5 year old girl is going to love) that keeps pulling me away from what (I think) is the smarter all-around choice - the Starblast. I'm sure, at the outset, moons and planets are going to be the primary focus, but obviously as the interest grows, she'll move further out into space.

Can you help me settle this debate once and for all? Also, for each choice, are there any essential acessories (e.g., lenses, maps, etc.) that I should consider purchasing at the outset that don't come with the kits for these?

Thanks so much for your help.

Don

Astroscan or Starblast

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful comments. Very helpful. I've decided to go with the Starblast. It seems to strike the best balance between optics and kid-friendliness. Price is a little better too, which will allow me to buy a 2x barlow and maybe another accessory or two.

Thanks again. I'll be sure to update the group after our first experience with it.
