Back Into Astronomy

Posted By Joe Lalumia

grin
Well I sold the boat and getting back into Astronomy again.

Just bought a 90 Meade ETX to try my hand with a small goto scope. (I also have a pair of 20x80 binoculars, a Celestron 80mm wide field and a BELIEVE IT OR NOT a Criterion Dynamax 8" SCT...its not as bad as you hear! HA!).

I want to learn goto with a smaller scope and if I like it then get something like a Meade lx200 or Celestron 9.25 goto. SO.........will this small ETX teach me what I need to know or did I just waste my money. ?

LX90 LNT Question

Posted By Joe Lalumia

OK.........I broke down and ordered an LX90 with LNT and upgraded coatings.......does anyone have experience with LNT? Does it work as advertised leveling the scope and aligning to True North?? Does it work better if the scope is level and pointed north already?

Any real experience comments on this feature would be appreciated.
Thanks,

New (old) LX90LNT - my new scope ARRIVED!

Posted By Joe Lalumia

Well here it is all setup for the first time.......everything seems to be working OK, even the Smartfinder. I also received a brand new Telrad (unmounted) with the scope FREE and a SCTcooler plus other assorted odds and ends like Kendrick heater.

Question- the Telrad has "sticky tape" on the bottom. Will this hold for a long while or just mess up the tube paint and fall off later?

and ...........YES that's my Criterion Dynamax 8" SCT setting on the table behind the new scope. HA!!! smile

Just an Update LX90 LNT

Posted By Joe Lalumia

Well still cloudy outside, but I managed to train the drives with a "target" in the yard........BUT the LNT would not keep the time.......after getting advice decided it needed a new battery.......which fixed it!!! Seems the little battery inside lasts about 1-2 years at most. Yea!! fixed it!!! but those adjustment SPRINGS on the LNT module are a bear to get back on!

Just a word to wise........put on the TOP screw and spring first (leave it loose and barely on) then squeeze the side spring and put it in position and quickly push through the side adjustment screw. AND watch out when taking them out ... the springs will POP OUT and you will be crawling on the floor(like me) trying to find it! (which I eventually did find it!). Oh well everything is back together and working now. smile

First Light- LX90 LNT

Posted By Joe Lalumia

Well finally got outside and was able to do a few things with the new (old) scope....collimated it.......did an align, a calibrate sensors.....and tried out the 2" eyepieces on Orion nebula, and Saturn.

Everthing seems to be working OK ......for first light EXCEPT THAT TREE that blocks my direct view of Polaris!!! Got to find another spot to set up in the yard! Maybe the front yard??

It amazes me the goto function! and I also found out how to Sync on an object. The next time out I will really try to locate some "fuzzy" objects. Ha! smile

First Light Stellarvue BV3s

Posted By Joe Lalumia

Well still learning the new-old 8"LX90 LNT ......and decided to try out the new BV3s on Saturn last night for the first time.

WOW! now I know why you can get hooked on binoviewing! Much easier with two eyes.......didnt seem to be any darker image due to "light" being split in half. It actually appeared brighter than a single eyepiece! The views were VERY sharp with the standard 23mm eyepieces that came with the binoviewers. Stars were pinpoint! and Titan was also visible. I am IMPRESSED! smile
