Hi, I want to buy a 2 inch eyepiece for an Orion Xt10 Dob for Nebula and other dso's etc. What do you recommend is the best all around starter 2" eyepiece for the first upgrade?

economical 2" ep for XT10i f4.7

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

I'm looking for an economical 2 inch widefield EP. I can't afford a nice Nagler or anything in that price range. I have been looking at Orions Q70(same as Garrett Opticals superwide) GSO's,Rini's, 38mm Erfle from Surplus Shed, etc. I'm clueless?Does anyone have experience with an Orion XT10i, or similar 10" 4.7 fast scope, that can recommend the best economical 2" EP for DSO's with the least amount of coma and distortion? I want to make the best choice with my limited budget. Also do you think a 32mm or 20mm would be used more for looking at DSO? Thanks

Barlow?

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

I was thinking about getting the GSO ED 2" Barlow (Garrett Optics)for my 10" f4.7 dob, as I can use it for all my 1.25 eyepieces too. Could I use that with my 30mm 2" eyepiece to look at star clusters, dso's etc. instead of getting another 2" 15mm eyepiece or would this lose to much light and make the eyepiece quality too inferior for good use?
Thank you

eyepiece

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

I tried my GSO 30 in my XT10i and loved it. Only negative thing is that it doesn't have enough focus and I must lift the ep. Nebulas looked nice in it. What eyepiece should I get so I could see star cluster's and galaxy's better? I was guessing around a 15mm for a 1200mm scope? At higher magnification, will a wide angle work good or am I better of just buying plossls(I can't spend too much)? Will any inexpensive wide angle(like the 1.25" 15mm GSO wv) in a fast scope(4.7) be ok or will I still run into distortion problems similar to the cheaper 2" 30ish wide angles?

Case for dobsonian?

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

Has anyone found any kind of case/bag that would hold larger dobsonians such as the 10"(XT10i)or have any suggestions? I can't find any kind of hockey bag or anything else long enough and don't want to pay Orion over $100 for their overpriced bag. Thanks

flocking?

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

What precautionary actions should I take to flocking my xt10i? I've never taken the mirrors off and am nervous about doing so. Should I do the whole thing or opposite the focuser and 12" above primary? My scope is a year old and has typical dust, is there any harm in just running water over the primary and rinsing with distilled water or should I just wait a couple more years until it'll really need a cleaning?

I havn't puchased anything yet, If you have any flocking tips/ suggestions I'll be happy to hear them. Thank you

Nagler Tele Vue 4.8mm?

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

I want a planetary widefield for my xt10i. My budget is around 100 dollars, do you think getting an excellent used Nagler TV 4.8mm 82deg, or a new Hyperion 5mm 68 deg or similar is best? The focal is 7mm with the TV and 20mm with the Hyperion, but the TV has 14 deg. wider view. I don't wear glass and don't think I'll mind shoving my face into the ep, but I lack experience. I also plan on using a barlow if conditions allow.

Light shild

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

I plan on making a light shield with my extra flock I have. I was going to make it shaped similar to the Astrozap Light shield(opposite the focuser). Does any one know how long it should extend from the top of my tube? Can't find any specs online except one person who made a home made tube made it 1.5x the diameter. XT10i outside diameter is 12"

new Hyperion 24mm?

Posted By Harry Vanderburg

Does anyone have any comments on the new Baader Hyperion 24mm? For simplicity and cost, I'm thinking of selling my 2" GSO 30mm and sticking with 1.25"(I recently ordered the TeleVue 2x 1.25" barlow, 1.25" DGM NPB, and getting a 1.25" variable polarizer, so all my ep's/filters will be interchangeable. The 2" GSO 30mm is 68 deg, same as Hyperion, my guess is they'll be about the same while viewing? I've came to conclude 2" ep's excel in longer focal legnths and wider than 30mm 68 deg? xt10i
