Online Prints of Astrophotos

Posted By Joshua Walawender

Hi all,

I'd like to get some prints of an astrophoto and I'm wondering if anyone has used any of the various online printing services and what you thought of the results.

My plan is to order a set of prints of various sizes to see how far the pixel count in my ST-2000 can be pushed when it comes to print size. I'd be interested in people's opinions on that as well.

cheers,
Josh

Mathis Instruments

Posted By Joshua Walawender

Hi all,

Anyone out there have experience with the Mathis Instruments lineup of heavy duty mounts (MI-500, MI-750, MI-1000)? If so, I would be interested in hearing any experiences you had and how you feel about their products.

thanks!
Josh

Tarantula Nebula from the US!

Posted By Joshua Walawender

We did this mostly on a lark, to see what it would look like. I had just bought the ST-2000 and don't have my filter wheel yet, so we were just out playing with the camera to see what it could do. Mike suggested the Tarantula Nebula and we managed to find it with binoculars just above the slope of Mauna Loa, so we swung over there with the scope.

After this "success" there was talk of trying to get 47 Tuc. Technically it does not rise here, but the summit of Mauna Kea has a dipping horizon ... smile

My 36 inch hotdog cooker

You could definitely do spectroscopy with it. Texas has the Hobby-Eberly telescope which is a fast spherical mirror telescope designed to be a big light bucket for spectroscopy. If you want to put a serious spectrograph on this though, the trick is going to be finding or making one that can handle the fast input beam. For simple visual spectroscopy you can just put a transmission grating up to it.

Opinion on TSA-102 S

Posted By Joshua Walawender

I've not seen the Tak TSA-102, so I can't give you an opinion on that, but one alternative would be the Stellarvue SV102T which is also a triplet f/8 at about the same price. I have the SV102ABV doublet and it is fantastic. I prefer the Feathertouch focuser on the SV scopes to the Tak focuser. The Tak focuser is good (a friend of mine has a Sky90 which I've used), but the Feathertouch is a step up over everything else I've seen.

APO vs. Achromat Focal Length

A friend of mine sent me this link a few weeks ago. It only covers traditional achromats, but it should be instructive: http://cityastronomy.com/CA-ratio-chart-achro.jpg

Meade RCX400 Versus A Real RC (anyone)?

Posted By Joshua Walawender

The following link should just about cover what you need. Mind you that this is from the company that makes RC optic sets and is suing Meade, so interpret this as you will. However, I think their discussion of optical science in this article is sound.

U of Hawaii 24"RCOS on 3600 mount

Posted By Joshua Walawender

Actually it's merely a 20 inch RCOS. smile We're setting up a pair of automated telescopes to study star formation. The other is a Stellarvue SV135 which sits in a small dome next door to this one.
