StarShoot Support?

Posted By Joe Hoener

Hello all. I'm getting started with wide-field piggybacking with a first-generation Orion StarShoot color with old Pentax 35mm lens attached. I'd like to discuss methods with anyone experienced with this kind of setup, especially the StarShoot -- I'm having a hard time finding a starting point with focusing!

Fork mount dec circle setting?

Posted By Joe Hoener

Hello! My C8's instruction manual tells me when polar aligning to first orient the OTA such that the dec circle setting is 90 degrees and the OTA is parallel to the forks. It seems to me that there's plenty of possibility for pointing errors during this procedure: the OTA may not be perfectly parallel to the forks, and the dec circle might be misaligned. Are these kinds of errors tuned out during drift alignment? Thanks!

Old Fastar lens collimation

Posted By Joe Hoener

I have an original Fastar lens assembly for my C8 that I'd love to use. But it's out of collimation and produces terrible coma, and there are no adjustment screws on this model. Does anyone know of a way to collimate this lens to overcome the coma? Thanks!

Filter placement in imaging train

Posted By Joe Hoener

Hello. I've read about filters and their uses in several astrophotography books. But the books haven't discussed where in the imaging train the filters are typically placed, and the hardware used to mount them. I use an 8" SCT, a small refractor, a Canon DSLR, a Starlite Express MX5C, and an Orion Starshoot I. Can someone give me some clues? Thanks!

Jim: What an amazing shot. I'm a beginner with a 350D, C8 and AT66, struggling with a steep learning curve. Your results with similar equipment gives me incentive to keep trying, even harder! Thanks.

I rather prefer the subdued colors: I think they give the subject a more ethereal quality. I'm a beginner struggling to learn the ropes with a 350D, and your work is very inspiring. Thanks!

Guy:

Good resources are Michael Covington's books Digital SLR Astrophotography and Astrophotography for the Amateur; and Jerry Lodriguss' astropix.com and his book(s).

Also check out the Canon_DSLR_Digital_Astro Yahoo forum.

Good luck.
