Hi,
I am new to the forum. I have read a lot about the discontinued 20Da and its specialized astrophotograpy usages. Since they are rare commodities nowadays, I thought if I can get a 20D body and send it in for the removal of the IR filter and additional modifications. Is it possible to achieve the same or better performance upon modification? What additional modifications do you recommend in addition to removing the IR filter?

I'm anticipating getting a nice long-range scope for my to-be-built varminter. The consensus in the gun community is that Leupold make top-notch scopes. I'm curious if Pentax, although 1/2 to 1/3 of Leupold's prices, make just as good scopes given their reputations with telescopes? Any general insights regarding telescope makers and gun scope makers (Swarowski, Nikon, etc. are also appreciated.

I got rid of one of my two 7mm and a 21mm Pentax XL and have been regretting since. Still got my 5.2,7,10.5, and 14 in the mix of TV's and Denks. Still I smile each time looking through the Pentax's. Sell the Pentax and I guarantee you'll regret it sooner or later.

One of the things I do is try (and own) and many different types of firearms as I can reasonably afford or rented. My thinking is that I need to be proficient in knowing how to operate most frequently encountered firearms.

Needless to say, while most firearms have similar features, they are not all the same in many subtle ways. Beyond the standard safety trainings, one of the things I teach a new shooter when going from a Glock to a 1911 is to really caution the lighter trigger weight and ALWAYS keep the safety on until ready to fire. It really helps to demonstrate the difference between DA and SA by showing the weight differences and the trigger distance with an unloaded gun.

Another thing I would definitely teach is humility. If you don't know how to operate a particular firearm...ASK!!! Some people/kids may be too macho to admit and will try to fumble around to figure out. Just because you've shot the same type of gun for 15 years, it doesn't mean you are proficient in another. Always teach how to to clear and check the firearms first.

Heck yeah! Though I think now may be the time to get an EBR or an AK. I JUST sent my payment in for a SIG Mosquito. I don't have a SIG or a .22LR. This will kill 2 with one stone.

I've tried a SIG before and really, really liked it. It just fits and feels right. Still, I'm a Glock fan because of its reliability. I put my life on its realiability because it's my prefer carry piece.

A big stick. I am not a believer in non-lethal weapons for several reasons:

1. You cannot practice with them so you don't know how good you are at using them or if they will work at all.

2. They are useless against lethal weapons (this is a big one)

3. Their regulations/legality are not premptive under state laws, which makes their legality vary from one locality to another, which can cause legal troubles for the users.

Any brand name HP that feeds reliably in your gun, especially when your pulse is 200bpm and all your techniques are pretty much academic. Be sure to put a few boxes through your HD gun. Keep the extra mag full FMJ that you practice with and know that it's 1000% reliable. HP ammo are just too expensive keep feeding your gun to ensure that level of reliability.

Ever shot a 5.56 indoor without ears on?
I had that misfortune due to forgetfulness. 5.56 is very loud and can potentially cause disorientation due to temporary hearing loss in a closed environment so bear that in mind in considering HD caliber.

As for the pistol carbine, I really love the Uzi. I have a 9mm Vector and can get a .45ACP barrel and bolt or .22LR conversion kit for it. Another one that is really, really nice to shoot is the Beretta Cx4 Storm. For .22LR, the new GSG-5 (and MP5 replica) looks awesome and is cheap to own.

Quite a post there my friend! I am still struggling with deciding which "red dot" to go with after doing some extensive research on them. It comes down to the price and what I am truly going to use it for...or do I want to go all tacticool and get me an EOTech or Aimpoint, which sometimes can cost as much as the rifle (AR15) itself, especially throwing a 3x magnifier behind it.

I still haven't owned any holographic sight to-date. My money is better invested elsewhere for the time being as iron sights are sufficient given the short range shooting that I usually do. I sold the SIG sight that came with my P556 because I did not like how spread out the "dot" was. I have a cheap Famous Maker red dot on my AR, but in pains me somewhat to have such a cheap thing on a nice S&W M&P15T. I'm actually thinking Bushnell holosight since they are made by L3, just like the EOTech. I've seen them sold new 2nd hand, for around $200 and usually can be had for $240 or so.

Hahaha...I never thought of any of these as anything other than...guns. The politics I've seen were much more on "assault" rifles and just the right to bear arms altogether. I guess I wasn't owning guns during the Clinton banning of Chicom stuff.

Anywho...I have 4 AK's:
1. A Century Bullpup - awesome configuration, terrible trigger, but a cool shooter.

2. A Polish Tantal AK74 - very nice to shoot, super cheap ammo, light weight, solid side-folding wire stock. Wife and I both love shooting this thing.

3. A rare Chinese Norinco 84s-1 - I bought it for no reason other than its rarity. Chambered in .223/5.56, it shares the ammo with my ARs, but the under-folding stock is absolutely atrocious to shoot. Magazines are very difficult to find.

4. A Russian Type III - currently being rebuilt by a smith in Oregon. Original Russian AK with wood stock. Still need to find someone to refinish the thing when it's done.

I'm going to add a Saiga 12, Saiga .308, and a PSL to the mix to cover all stock types and AK calibers there is, but...NOT for a very long while if I value my life to my wife.
