Comet McNaught crossing NGC891

Posted By James DiLapo

It took a while to put together the color image. I processed 80 LRGB sub-frames (15 sec.ea.) and stacked once on the stars and again on the comet. Of course, it didn't help with the comet only 8 degrees above the horizon and taking the image with a 12" SCT @6.3 and SBIG ST9-E camera (1920 mm. focal length). You can also view a video of the event at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DY3nfJgys4

The Eagle - M16

Hey Jim ...

Beautiful image of the Eagle. Very natural looking shot with superb transitions from the bright areas to the faint. I think it's one of the nicest I've seen in a while.

Comet McNaught crossing NGC891

Hi All,

Thanks for all the nice comments. It was a very difficult image to process since the comet was so close to the horizon. At the time, I didn't think I would be able to get anything worth posting.

M98 puzzle

Hi Charles,

Black Hole? ....Nah, just kidding! It just shows up on the POSS1 red image. It's most likely a plate defect ... it's pretty common. It could also be a piece of dirt or "grunge" in the optical system or on the plate. I get little "black holes", all the time in my images, from "grunge" on a filter or on the chip.
