Re: Dark Sky Sites

Posted By Warren Boyles

Just out of curiousity, do any of you carry a weapon of any kind with you when you travel alone to a dark sky site. I've often thought about taking a handgun with me. Actually I'm more concerned about hitting a deer while travelling at night though.

Meade LightBridge Dobs

Posted By Warren Boyles

I currently own an Orion XT8 Classic purchased used a few years ago and am thinking of increasing aperture. Does anyone own one of these new Meade LightBridge dobs or has anyone heard any comments about them? Any comments either positive or negative would be much appreciated.

Burgess Optical TMB Planetary Eyepieces

Posted By Warren Boyles

Hi,

Just was wondering if any of you have used the Burgess Optical TMB Planetary eyepieces and if so, what do you think of them especially compared to Radians. They're priced at $99.00 at Astronomics compared to about $230.00 or so for the Radians.

Widest possible FOV using an 8" dob

Posted By Warren Boyles

Hi all,
I recently bought a used Orion SkyQuest XT8 Intelliscope with a 2" focuser through Astromart and even more recently bought a GSO 30mm SuperView 2" eyepiece to use in my new scope. This is my first scope with a 2" focuser. After comparing the 30mm GSO with a 32mm Plossl (1.25" format) I saw very little difference in the star field around Deneb when comparing the two eyepieces. Any advise on which eyepiece to get for a wider true field of view? I'd like to buy something which would encompass the whole of the Veil Nebula. I realize this may not be possible in an 8" f/6 Newt as it is not a wide field type of telescope. I can't really afford the premium eyepieces, so please don't recommend anything over about $150.
Thanks,
Warren Boyles

Bought the Pro Optic ultra wide eps from Adorama

David,
Do you know if these are the same eyepieces that Orion sells under the name Expanse?

Barlow Lens

David,
This is a decent barlow which I believe is the same as the Celestron Ultima barlow.

Orion Ultraview 10x50

Posted By Warren Boyles

I agree completely Alan. I have the 7x50 Ultraviews and that 22mm of eye relief is great. I can easily see the entire field of view wearing my glasses.

Floaters

Posted By Warren Boyles

Jason,
I too have floaters rather badly in my right eye, but my left is mostly floater free so I use that eye when viewing Luna and planets at higher powers in my 8" Dob. Interesting comment by Paul concerning binoviewers. Just one more rational for buying one.

How I avoided aperature fever

Posted By Warren Boyles

I know that for me an 8" Orion or Discovery dob is the limit in both physical size and financially. I bought an 8" Orion XT8 used back in March and after replacing the secondary (it gave astigmatic images) I really like the scope. The OTA of the 10" is 15 pounds heaver and an increase of that amount would just be too much for me.

July 2003 observer's log

Mike,
Sounds like July in NC was just what May was like in PA. Hang in there as conditions are sure to improve eventually.
