you know i haven't seen any recomendations as far as lit or other aids to educate us rookies, so i would like to know if i done good, at the used book store yesterday and stumbled on the 3 vol. set of Burnhams Celestial Handbook, got to looking at it chock clear full of good stuff, how usefull is it. john

i recently placed an add offering to trade a camera lens for a scope, i got some pretty rude comments from people about trying to rip people off and how they could get it new cheaper and so fourth, so i went down to one of the photo shops to see if what they were saying had any truth to it. living in the bay area things tend to be readily available, so they showed me the latest version of my lens, sure enough it was only $650.00, but what a hunk of junk it had become, it was like comparing a synta to an ap, i guess the masses have ruled again, make it cheaper and they will come. john

University Optics orthos are great simple eye pieces good fov and eye relief, economical and real easy to resell if you decide to go a dif direction they disapear off astro mart almost as fast as they come up, to determin magnification devide focal length of eye peice into focal length of scope ie if your scope is an f8 it will be 800 mm long a 10 mm eye peice will go into that 80 times wich is 80x magnifacation. and a barlow will efectivly double the number of eye pieces you have, do your math though an 18 mm eyepeice behinde a barlow becomes a 9 mm etc so don't buy a 9 and an 18. john

btw, www.universityoptics.com, is a place to look at, i've been pretty satisfied with their 2.8 klee telenegative amplifier, the guy is real nice and very helpfull some times its a little hard to get a hold of him but keep trying, the price is right to. john

Wood vs Metal Tripod (again)

well micheal, now this my field, weight adds stability, how the tripod is made and the materials used and what manner their applied makes the difference, the wood tripods are only more stable then the typical commercial metal trypods because they use very light extruded aluminium and plastic joints, under load the plastic loses its shape and becomes sloppy in its socket, and the aluminium leg are subject to flexure, a less flexible leg is inharently heavier, metal joints are heavier, etc. btw my tripod is 90 lbs. but it will suport 500 lbs. it extends up to about 9' and dosen't even wiggle with 7' of large refractor on it. so yours isn't so bad. john
