Deepsky Binoviewer

Posted By David Grau

Does anyone know anything about the Deepsky Binoviewer that is being advertised on Astromart? Anyone ever try one or compare it to other binoviewers?

Thanks.

Binoviewer and Deepsky

Posted By David Grau

I've used my binoviewer on the moon and planets and think it's great. However, the aperture is small (18mm) and won't work well for deepsky objects.

Do folks with larger aperture binoviewers use them on a regular basis for deepsky objects?

I'm debating whether or not to buy the new Deepsky binoviewer (or Televue or AP).

Thanks.

Etalon Tuner

Has anyone used an Etalon tuner (the one in the diagonal) with a front filter that uses the T-max tuner?

Thanks.

Teegul with Lapides mod-anyone using it?

Posted By David Grau

Joe,

Make sure that there is no slip when using the slo-mo controls. I would turn the slow motion knob (either one) and it would take a half turn to get the gears to mesh so that the scoe would start moving. I wound up sending it back to TNR for repair. When I got it back it was even worse. Returned the unit to Anacortes. Changed to a Giro XL and am infinitely more happy with that setup when used with my Sky 90.

Other people really like their Teegul with Lapides mod so hopefully you will really like the one you're getting.

Good luck.

SM60 vs SM90

Posted By David Grau

The Solarmax 60 is excellent but if you start going into something like a Solarmax 90 then at that price point a whole 'nother world opens up to you, e.g., Daystar and Solar Spectrums h-alpha filters. Solar Spectrum filters can be bought with a digital oven for around $4250 including telecentric lens and energy rejection filter that fits on the front of the scope. That's a .2A filter as opposed to the .7A filter of Coronado. Way more detail (check the cloudy nights review on the Daystar vs. Coronado filters; Solar Spectrum is similar but you can get a narrower bandwidth and I think, though won't swear, a nicer digitally controlled oven and the filter heated in 2 minutes and has a fan to cool it or heater makes any change within 30 secs). Also, I find the "other" company much better more pleasant to deal with.

I think for the money the Solarmax 60 (and the convenience, admittedly) is excellent. I'd go for the Daystar or Solar Spectrum instead of the SM90. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck.
