Beginner needs some advice

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

First, I'm very impressed with the shots I've found on these pages. I'm part way through buying stuff I need to take some shots of my own. I already have a Canon Digital Rebel, a few lenses, remote shutter release and a big tripod. Will soon be buying a scope, probably a TV85. (Too big, maybe, but my buddy has a Swarovski we can use when my rig is too much.) Here's the question - what should I start out with to mate the scope with the camera? There seems to be lots of different ways to go. I'll figure out what I like eventually, but what would be a good starting point? I don't want to buy a lot of stuff that doesn't really work.

Apochromatic - any difference in daylight?

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

Buying a refractor mostly for daylight terrestrial use. Is there much practical difference between apochromatic and not? Say a TV-85 vs a Pronto. Would I see any real difference between the 2?

Alternative to clamshell for Takahashi FS-78?

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

The factory Tak clamshell seems to be overkill for me - does anyone make a more lightweight alternative? I'm only mounting it to a heavy photo tripod. Not coming up with anything on Google or A/M. Thanks...

Tak question - 2" adapter?

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

Just getting started - bought a Tak FS-78 with a 1.25" adapter. Would like to buy mostly 2" eyepieces, so I know I need some kind of 2" adapter. What exactly do I need to buy - (part numbers would be great). Please be specific - I'm not 100% sure what a "visual back" is so I don't know if that's all I need or not. The Tak web site is not very helpful. Thanks...

2" adapter for FS-78 - what to buy?

Beginner eyepiece focus question

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

I'm just putting my first rig together, and my diagonal is somewhere in UPS land right now. Just for something to do, I put an eyepiece directly into the focuser (no diagonal). I expected to see a reversed image, but it won't focus at all. I discovered it will "sort of " focus if I loosen the E/P and hold it about an inch further out than the normal position. I'm hoping that the added length of the diagonal will make this go away. The scope is a Tak FS-78 and the E/P is a Nagler 11 T6, in case it matters. Thanks...

How to calculate Powermate/Barlow magnification wh

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

I thought this would be easy to find on the WEB, but no luck. How do I calculate the total magnification when I stack 2 or more Powermates? Is it different if they are upstream or downstream from the diagonal? Thanks for any info...

How to buy a filter?

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

I have a TV-76 and want to buy a polarizing filter and maybe some others. I have the ability to screw a filter in any of several locations, such as on the 2" diagonal, on 2" or 1.25" eyepieces or Powermates, or even on the objective lens. Is there any particular advantage for any position? The obvious one is that the smaller ones are cheaper, but is there a clear technical reason to use one position over another? Thanks for any info...

Eyepiece recommendation for Swarovski scope

Posted By Ed Manspeaker

I have a Swarovski 80MM spotter with the astro eyepiece adapter, so I can use standard 1.25" eyepieces. Focal length of the scope is 480 MM. I want to buy an astro eyepiece or 2. Here's the question:

What kind of eyepiece should I buy? If I buy the very best Nagler, will I notice much difference over, say, a Plossl or some other narrow-view lens type? I'm looking for a low power wide angle view, but I'm not sure if the Porro-prism Swarovski will take full advantage of the wider angle views available with the more expensive eyepieces. Anybody have any thoughts?
