would you say something?

Posted By David Gale

I was in my local mall today in the Discovery Channel store looking around and overheard a salesperson talking to a family about one of the scopes that they sold. I believe it was the Meade 125mm etx. The salesperson was mis-informed about a number of items and was touting the advertised 500X that was actually written on the sign. This family obviously didn't know what they were getting and the salesperson didn't know that much more. The sale was obviously going to go through and I felt like taking over and talking to the family to see if that was the best choice for them, I didn't, though, feeling it would be very rude esp. if I talked them out of the purchase. This scope might be a fine choice for this family but it will be blind luck if it is, and its just as likely to be a frustration to someone who doesn't know what they're doing. They walked out all smiles with the big box and made me hope that the smiles stay in the future. How many of you out there would step in and say something in a situation like this esp. if you thought bad info was being given? Dave G

old Binoculars

Posted By David Gale

My wife's grandfather recently died and among his stuff we found a pair of binoculars that are about 50-60 years old. These are perhaps the smallest pair I've ever seen. They're made by Nippon Kogaku of Japan. They're 6x and the diameter of the objective is not listed but I estimate it at 15mm. They also say "Mikron" on them. The quality of construction seems very good. They're all metal with individually focusable eyepieces. The image quality in daytime observing is very good. Does anyone out there know anything about these and is there any collector value in them. Thanks Dave Gale

visual separation of Jup. moons

Posted By David Gale

Saturday night I was watching Io and Callisto pass each other. My question;is there any way to find out what the closest visual separation was between the two moons. I'm curious because I could keep them separated the whole time although it took almost 600x to do it. Dave G

Satan repent

Posted By David Gale

Here's an interesting question. Do you think God hopes that Satan will repent and "move back in" someday. This is not meant as a silly question and I'm really interested in your well thought out answers.

On the lighter side

Posted By David Gale

I got this forwarded in my e-mail and thought it was great.

How do you get to heaven? Just ask a child!
Sometimes it takes the mind of a child...

I was testing the children in my Sunday school class to see
if they understood the concept of getting to heaven.
I asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big
garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would
that get me into Heaven?"

"NO!" the children answered.
"If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and
kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?"

Again, the answer was, "NO!"
By now I was starting to smile. Hey, this was fun!
"Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to
all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me
into Heaven?" I asked them again.

Again, they all answered, "NO!"

I was just bursting with pride for them.

Well, I continued, "then how can I get into Heaven?"

A five-year-old boy shouted out,
"YOU GOTTA BE DEAD."
