Selecting a New Setup

Posted By David Cahn

I am relatively new to astronomy, but am an old hand at imaging (I'm a professional photographer). I need help selecting a telescope system. I will be using it both visually and for astrophotography, the latter with a large DSLR. The OTA and the mount must be TOP quality and high performing. The setup should be relatively easy to use with GOTO mount. I'm looking at Celestron C9.25 Edge, Takahashi Epsilon and 210M, Astro-Tech RC 10", Vixen VMC260 and VC200L. What setup do you recommend and why?

Thank you in advance for the advice!!

Hardware questions from a newbee

Posted By David Cahn

Hey gang-

I'm a retired pro photographer thinking about getting into astrophotography. As part of my learning path, I'm wondering if we can use a DSLR lens and body attached to good mount. I have a Canon 600mm L 4.0 lens that is super sweet. If doable, where can mount adapters be found?

Forgot my second question

If I can use an Astro-tech mount, can I attach that to a photographic tripod? The large Gitzo carbon fiber tripods handle heavy loads and are rock solid.

DSLR Viewfinders

Posted By David Cahn

I need a viewfinder for my Canon 1dMk4 (for astrophotography). The standard Canon offering is okay, but I was wondering if anyone is aware of a better setup?

Mewlon Purchase?

Posted By David Cahn

I'm getting ready to purchase a Tak Mewlon 250CRS. It's pricey at 9k and I want to make sure there are not better choices out there. Thoughts?

Unfair Question

Posted By David Cahn

I'm ready to buy ONE scope. I'll use it primarily for planetary and lunar viewing and astrophotography. DSO is a possibility in the future. QUALITY must be tops.

Here's what's on the list right now:

AP 130mm
AP 140mm
TMB 130mm
TEC 140mm

Ooops. I forgot the Tak 130
Ignore price for purposes of this exercise. WHAT WOULD YOU BUY and why?

C14 Lift

Posted By David Cahn

I'm thinking about purchasing a C14. Is it realistic for one person (me) to lift this babe from storage to mount without slipping a disk? I'm not a body builder.

Input is appreciated!!

Okay, here's a twist.

I just purchased a used TV 101is. I think this is probably a good choice for routine visual and astrophotog, so my question shifts to what SECOND scope should I consider. Perhaps a big boy for aperture fever (C14). If so, is it realistic for one person that's not a body builder to lift this thing from storage to mount without slipping a disk?

Feedback thus far has been terrific! Keep it coming!!
