Does anybody know what this finders look like. From the description they seem to be just simple short tube refractors that allow 1.25 inchc lenses, barlows, and other accessories. However I'm confused as the maximum magnification the suggest on their website 30X. Using 40X per inch of aperture those scopes should allow 80X for the 50mm and at least 120X for the 80mm (unless their optics are worse than a walmart bought telescope). Also taking my assumptions as correct as anyone used this finders as guidescopes for imaging? and if so how well did they perform? Any picture of these scopes would be welcomed as they don't have one on their website.

comments on the orion 120ST refractor

I recently bought the 120ST. I think it's a very nice telescope for the price. However my telescope came with a couple of major problems. The first is the expected chromatic aberation of very bright objects (probably a little worse than I expected). The second regards the Focuser: the pinnion was bent out of shape and a new one is being sent to me and more problematic for a person that buys it as his first scope and doesn't have a focuser extender; the scope will not focus, the focuser is simply too short. Wondering if anyone else has had the same problems with the focuser on this scope?

AP is for astronomy or speculation?

I was wondering does anybody actually look through or photographs through an AP telescope? I far as I can tell most of the AP telescopes offered on the clasifieds are mint telescopes that never left their cases and as far as I can tell were purchased for the sole purpose of resaling them at a later date. As long as people are willing to pay premiums on the resale price or 30% to 100% people will continue to speculate on the AP refractor. It's a shame that so many of those fantastic telescopes become trading cards instead of amazing intruments for gaze at the sky.

Why can't an SCT be collimate with a laser?

I collimate my SCT using a star as recommended by all the experts. However I do not understand the reason why the alignment of the secondary mirror cannot be done with a laser the same way as with a newtonian. The only reason I can come up with is that an SCT as a correct plate which needs to be taken into consideration while collimating. It would be so much easier to colimate an SCT during daylight hours rather than messing around with allen wrench or in my cash little knobs in the dark. If anyone could enlighten me on the reason I would appreciated.

New Orion Epic ED2 eyepieces

Just recieved the 9.5mm eyepiece. I think it's a great buy for 69$. I could only compare it the view I've had with an 8mm Televue plossl, although maybe not as sharp as the Televue plossl, the large eye-relief more than makes up for any of it's optical shortfalls. Would like to hear from anyone that tested the ED2 next to premium eyepieces with similar eye-relief like naglers and see what kind of problems they were able to see.

LX90 eyepiece suggestions

I have a meade LX90 too. I do most of my observing with the 26mm eyepiece. I use a meade 2X and a televue 3X barlow with the 26mm for planetary observation (makes it equal to a 13mm and a 8.67mm but with the eye-relief of a 26mm eyepiece). For lower power I still use the 26mm with a 6.3 focal reducer( gives me a 41mm eyepiece equivalent, but brighter image due to the reduced focal length of the scope). I have a 8mm televue plossl but hardly ever use due to it's very small eye-relief. You might want to get one of those expensive large eye-relief high power pieces like a 5mm Radian or similar for use to magnify deep sky objects. I will when I feel I can afford one.

Stefan, I have the same problem as you most eyepieces I would like are way too expensive. However I ordered some orion epic ED-2, they should arrive in mid june. According to the desciption they seem to be the poor man's radian at only 69$ each. I hope they performances will be reasonable. they have a 20mm eye relief and 55 FOV for every focal length between 3.7mm and 22mm. Not vouching for them as I have not seen through them, but I would suggest waiting to read posts on them when they come out before making a buying decison.
