NGC 5982 Triplet Group

Posted By Dennis Persyk

The NGC 5982 Triplet Group in Draco just fit in the FOV of my C-11 at f/5. Image comprises 18 x 3 minutes unguided with MX716 camera.

M16 Unguided at 1400 mm

Posted By Dennis Persyk

I trained the PEM in my AP1200GTO and imaged M16 with the C-11 at f/5. Image comprises 11 x 4 minutes unguided with the MX716 camera. Although I have the STAR2000 for self-guiding, I find the amp glow objectionable and hence prefer shorter, unguided exposures.

vdB 142 one-shot color

Posted By Dennis Persyk

van den Bergh 142 is a small 1 arc minute patch of reflection nebulae inside of the very large area of emission nebulosity IC 1396 in Cepheus. The image is 10 x 5 minutes, unguided, with a Takahashi Epsilon 130 on an AP1200GTO mount.

I am considering getting a Starlight Xpress SXV-H9C one-shot color camera and Jeff Terry http://mrmac.mr.aps.anl.gov/~astronut/ supplied his camera and acquisition software to take the color image. Jeff did all of the processing except for a final touch up by me in ImagesPlus. I need to work out some driver problems so that I can acquire and process the images myself to get a better feel for the camera.

C/2003 G1 LINEAR Faint Little Comet

Posted By Dennis Persyk

With everyone imaging very bright Q4 NEAT these days, I opted for a much dimmer comet: C/2003 G1 LINEAR at magnitude 17.0 per Seiichi Yoshida, http://www.aerith.net/comet/weekly/current.html

The image is a stack of a 5 minute and a 3 minute unguided frames taken with the C-11 at f/5 and MX716 camera. I later looked up the relative motion and found it was only 0.004 arc seconds per minute. I could have taken 5 hour’s worth of images, aligned on the stars, and not blurred the comet! A movie of this one would be very boring!

C2003 K4 as seen by CCD and Eyeball

Posted By Dennis Persyk

I imaged comet C2003 K4 LINEAR the other night and produced a short movie illustrating its relative motion of 2.9 arc seconds per minute against a star field in Bootes.

On my new Images Page I also provide some tips on correlating a camera image to a planetarium program to determine proper orientation.

Finally, I have included a simulated eyepiece view to show you what I saw through the eyepiece of the C-11 scope while I was imaging through the E160.

I hope you will find a visit to my New Images page both educational and interesting.

M17 CCD and Eyepiece View

Posted By Dennis Persyk

I am trying to learn color imaging and shot M17 the other night in RGB. It is the first decent color image I’ve taken in RGB and I have lots to learn.

I’ve also included a simulated eyepiece view to show what I saw through the C-11 scope at 147x magnification. It illustrates vividly how much more the camera sees than the eye.

2 Different M20s – Which is Best?

Posted By Dennis Persyk

In my third attempt at RGB tricolor I have run into what I think are light pollution issues. I can handle light pollution in my gray scale imaging but it is much harder in color.

I have posted two images to my website and I’d appreciate feedback on which appeals to you.

M8 BiColor Image R+B

Posted By Dennis Persyk

I ran out of time and clear skies imaging M8 and only had red and blue frames towards my RGB tricolor image. I averaged the 15 minutes each of red and blue to synthesize a fake green frame, combined them as an RGB, and was pleasantly surprised with the result. Take a look and see what you think.

vdB 142 RGB and One-Shot Color

Posted By Dennis Persyk

I imaged van den Bergh 142 in both RGB and one-shot color for the same acquisition time of 50 minutes.

Takahashi E160 f/3.3 astrograph, AP1200GTO, MX716 and (Jeff Terry’s) SXV-H9C cameras, TrueTechnology filters on the MX716.
