Thats awesome Jim! I'm really impressed that you didnt spend much time getting data. Man, I'd have shot that object for 6 hours and still not gotten as good a result. So whats the secret with that chip youre using? 8O

Does false color show when imaging w/achromats?

Posted By Vincent Bert

Gary here are a few comparison images showing the different amount of Chromatic Abberation in several scopes labled as APO's. All images were taken with the ST-2000 and each color channel was focused individually. One thing to note is that the brighter field stars will show the CA more readily as in the case of the IC 434 and cone nebula images. There are also other factors at work like varying seeing conditions when each channel was captured, different color balance in processing etc, so this is not flawless comparison by any stretch of the imagination. However it works well as a rough guide.

Hopefully some folks out there have some images through different achromats for comparison also.

awesome shot Mike. man that stuff along the terminator is a tough target as you know, since there's not much variation between the whitest of whites and dark shadows. However, I think you did an excellent job of bringing out the detail and keeping noise under control.

Help, what is this?

Posted By Vincent Bert

well Megastar doesnt show anything but that doesnt mean its not there.. The shape however suggests its an artifact, but who knows, cant be sure unless you take another image I think, maybe a bit offset from your center on this one. The Hickson stuff looks great BTW, very nice deep image even in raw presentation.
