What's your contribution?

Posted By Darrell Fichtl

My daughter is 52 so for me it isn't a question at all, BUT if my children were 18-25 I'd be doing everything I could to keep them out of this nonsense war. I wonder how many $100,000+ a year households have their kids in Iraq?

It is categorically stupid, lie driven and a total waste of both human and economic resources.

We and our children will be paying for this pre-planned invasion for some time. I never thought I would see the day when the US would start another war for little or no reason. OIL?

Andrew:

Unfortunate, but all true.

As soon as there is a government freebie the poachers will line up in droves to cash in.

I know that PK thinks I'm a liberal, but as you can see, that's far from the truth. I just don't like hsuB.

Laser collimator - safe for eyes?

Posted By Darrell Fichtl

I work with lasers all the time at VERITAS at Mt. Hopkins and just went through a laser safety course a Arizona University.

I think the lasers that you are working with are 2 or 3A. You have to start being concerned when you get to 3B or 4. 3b & 4 can damage the eye before the blink response can activate.

Keep in mind that no laser is good for the eye. If you look at the stats on eye injuries from lasers, you'll find that the majority of injuries occur when aligning the laser.

Lastly, be careful where you point it a night. You can get in one hell of a lot of trouble if you happen to point it accidently at a plane in the air or a cop on the ground!

Stars are not points...

Posted By Darrell Fichtl

They never will. Even the 6.5 meter at Mt.Hopkins will not resolve stars to "points of light" There was a piece in the Q&A section of S&T or Discover magazine just recently on that subject.

To resolve a star as a point it would have to be HUGE.

Concrete vs Steel "I" Beams

Posted By Darrell Fichtl

I still favor the KISS attitude.

Steel goes "Ping"
Concrete goes well ah, "Thud"

Evolution of the astronomer

1. I don't like freezing my rear end off
2. My eyes don'y work so well anymore through the eyepiece
3. It's much easier to sit down in my computer room in an easy chair.
