New M63

Posted By Rick Krejci

Just finished an image of M63 using the SXV-H9 and a C11 mounted on a G11. No dark frames were used (not at all needed with the SXV). You can find the details and other images here:

M101

Spent a load of time on this cool object, even with the half moon. As usual with the SXV, no darks needed.

Canon EOS 10D images

Posted By Rick Krejci

I just purchased the EOS 10D a few weeks ago and have had a couple of nights to put it through it's paces. So far, I'm quite impressed. For a comsumer camera (and CMOS to boot), it is very sensitive and very low noise. Here are a few of my initial images:

I did no dark frame subtraction for any of these. It's not going to beat many of the dedicated cooled astro CCDs, but it seems to be a great way to get sucked into this hobby.

With these initial tests out of the way, I'm ready to do some longer, deeper exposures to push the limits of the camera a little more. Let's hope the weather holds out.

M16 in Ha with SXV-H9

Posted By Rick Krejci

Hey,
Was finally able to beat the monsoons and captured M16 in Ha.

I took 28 1 minute images with the SXV-H9 through an Astronomik Ha filter...details can be found here:

Mars from 8/17/03 7:30UT

Posted By Rick Krejci

I finally had a nice, steady night last night to image Mars...I used a Toucam Pro, 7" MakNewt and a 5x Powermate. Took about 4 minutes worth and ran through the new Registax 2.0. I had also run it through the older version as well as K3CCDTools, but the new Registax was the easy winner. I post processed them in Photoshop, mostly using successive unsharp masking.

I also put a 2 image animated GIF on my web page here:

Thanks for looking!

Mars from 8/29/03

Well, the clouds broke here in AZ and, with a nice humid night, the seeing was pretty good. I decided to try my SXV-H9 rather than the Toucam...results look promising. For all the details and another shot from the same night, see my webpage here:

M31 with a 10D

Posted By Rick Krejci

Well, due to mount troubles, I've been quiet a while, but I was finally able to exercise my cameras this past weekend. Last night, I captured a little over an hour of M31 using my Tak Epsilon 160, which is a fast f3.3 Newtonian...perfectly matched for the 10D. I used ImagesPlus's newest and greatest features and must say it worked superbly...the adaptive dark frame subtraction made for a much more noise free final product. I did little noise suppression, really.

Anyway, the final version and more details are here:

Comments/suggestions welcome.

Cocoon Nebula with Canon 10D

Posted By Rick Krejci

Had a nice night out tonight and was able to capture a lot of good
stuff.

I wanted to try the Cocoon Nebula, since it has an interesting mix of colors and dust lanes...and a bazillion stars.

I took 80 minutes worth of exposures through the Tak Epsilon at f3.3. Used ImagesPlus for about everything except the final curves adjusting and tweaks. I gave a go at flat fielding with a little success, although I had to crop this one a little. Anyway, here are the details and full resolution link:

M45 with the Canon EOS 10D

Posted By Rick Krejci

Last night was a perfect night for imaging...cool, calm and crystal clear. I captured about 1.5 hours worth of exposures of M45 with the F3.3 6" Tak Epsilon. I was really surprised how deep the 10D was able to get!

Processing was really not too bad at all...the sky background was fairly smooth even when stretched severly.
