Celestron 8"

Hi
I got a Celestron 8" telescope; my boss gave it to me because it has troubles with the optics, he lives in Key Largo and the marine air got in to the telescope. You can see mildew like on the optics.
He sent it once to the factory to repair and hey returned it saying it was not worth.I supose that they don't do the recoat.
Today I started to check in the Internet for places to repair it and I could not find one, but I found out that a lot of people make their one.
I don't think that it is not worth ( it was a 2500.00 telescope when new), the mirrors could be recoated and in the worst case I could use them to make a Dobsonian, but then what could be bad in the tube iself?
I also have to get a clamp that goes in the tripod to level it and the focus motor ( the shaft is broken )
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Gilbert

You might want to contact Roger Tuthill scopes and see what they think.
I met him at Stellafane, and he was an honest person. He has helped me with various problems before.I'm sure his company still carries on the tradition of being top notch.
Good luck.....Gerard

Did you call Celestron? I have spoke with them in the past. They do offer recaoting services or replacement optics, either way though its probably not worth it.

Unless it is known to have a very good figure, you would be better off just looking for a used OTA on Astromart. I checked on strip and recoat of my scope (9.25) at one point and was informed it would $500. Replacement optics would be $700.

Also you have to pay insured shipping both ways, and then they will have the scope for at least several weeks.

If it were me Iand I didnt have knowledge of how good the optics were before the mildew problem, I would look for a used OTA or even a new one.
