Evolution of the ED APOs?

I am considering a 4" or 5" ED, based only on what I'm reading in forums, on review websits, etc., it sounds like Meade has experienced a learning curve with these scopes, and they have finally got it right. If I am looking at used units on Astromart or other sources, is there a "cut off date" where I would not want to stay away from older scopes? What't this groups experience with Meade regarding service on "non original owner" scopes? Regards, Todd Alving, Hopkinton, MA

I recently purchased a used 127mm (5") ED scope. I also have done a lot of work, on the internet, and on the scope. Here's what I have found. If you plan on buying a used scope you probably won't want to deal with Meade unless you have no mechanical skills at all. I have heard that if you have a problem with the scope (and you most likely will) you must ship the scope to them, paying freight both ways and whatever labor fee they charge, and you need to be prepaired to be without the scope for a few weeks at best. When you receive the scope back, after being shipped on UPS ground, you may find that the scope is no better or maybe even worse. These scopes are extremely sensitive and the collimation and lens centering needs to be exact. I spent 2 weeks adjusting, testing, readjusting, being disappointed...you get the picture. But now that I'm used to the scope and the fine adjustments that must be made, I totally love it! These are a great deal! but you must be patient with them and not give up. And if you buy a new scope I would suggest getting it from a dealer you can drive to, rather than mail order, again, due to the need to possibly bring it back if adjustment is needed. I hope I have not discouraged you, but if you're not prepaired for the negative possibilities of this scope it will be a horrible experience. Of coarse you may get a scope that is dead on perfect and you may think I'm totally crazy. Hope this helps.

To follow up, how do those of you who own Meade 4" ED's like them? Thanks. Mark Costello

"I hear you're mechanically inclined. Did you ever do anything with perpetual motion?"

"Yeah, I nearly had it a couple of times."

Thanks to Gregg et al for the responses to my inquiry. I get the sense that there really isn't an "early vs. late" manufacturing date thing going on here with the EDs, and that you really need to simply adjust if necessary the OTA that you have, is that fair? Can the group give me an idea of a "list" of items required to get/keep an ED in alignment and tip top shape? Todd Alving
