Meade LX-5 2120 problem

Just bought an LX-5 2120 about a month ago and need help with an annoying issue with the RA drive mechanism, but may be also in the hand controller. I've verified that it does seem to track in RA, but I'm not able to get it to manually slew back and forth using the buttons on the controller… all
I get is the sound of the motor trying to engage (about 1 time for every 2-3 attempts with the East button - the West button produces no response at all) and sounding like the motor trying to work, but is being obstructed and stalling.
The power supply unit shows being fully charged and actually drives the declination motor perfectly well. Releasing the clutch lever, the scope seems to rotate in RA very smoothly and easily, both by hand and using the manual knob.

Any ideas or suggestions? I've been advised that an LX-6 base would interchange with minimal difficulty. Anyone got one handy?

Thanks!
