Without knowing exactly what you are doing or not doing, it is impossible to give you specific advice...but the following may help:
Run off a good, strong, fully charged DC source like a jump start battery pack.
Calibrate motors.
Train drives.
When you are centering alignment stars, MAKE _SURE_ YOU ARE CENTERING THE CORRECT STARS.
