Hi,

Just starting out &

I thought I would buy a reasonably priced telescope, & found the DS-114ATE w/ Auto Star on E-Bay pretty cheap.

I know its kinda out dated & I think my expectaions are a little high, but will I be totally dissapointed w/ the 4.5" apeture. And is it worth upgrading the eyepiece to the 1.25".

Any Advice Welcome-
Thanks,
Alex

you might be better off saving a few more bucks and getting something like celestron FirstScope 114 EQ or a meade equilivent.

a 4.5" apeture scope will give you some good views but not outstanding. If you can find an astronimy club in your area and meet up with them and have a look through a few scopes before you make a purchase.

But take your time in picking out a scope and read as many reviews as you can. Stick with something that has 1.25" eyepieces or one that can do both 1.25" and 2" eyepieces.

Many beginners get discouraged in astronomy due to poor or inappropriate equipment.

I think its a great place to start. Learn how to set up and align the scope first. Take your time thae stars are not going anywhere, at least not very fast. Then do a star test. You will find that it will be out of collimation. All that handling during shipping will shake the optics up. A local astronomy club can help with. Go to a few star parties with your scope set it up and see if you can check out a few different eyepieces. What you may not be able to see with the eyepieces you were sent may pop into view with a better one. What ever you do just stick with it. Lastly just remember star party etiquette, No White Lights!!
