The upper half of this image is the original hydrogen-alpha (Ha) filter image of a small portion of the Veil Nebula, a huge region of glowing gasses in the constellation Cygnus. I was intrigued by the leaping tiger form and for the lower half of this image I applied a luminance color map that replaces darker areas with red and yellow and brighter areas with green and blue. While I made this colorful version for the fun of it, the same technique is often used for scientific purposes to make small difference in brightness more obvious for analysis. The original Ha image is from a stack of five 30-minute exposures with my 16” RCOS telescope at Sierra Remote Observatory near Shaver Lake in September, 2007.
