Description

The “Crab” nebula is a supernova remnant 6,500 light-years distant located in Taurus. The supernova that created the Crab was most notably recorded as being visible during the daytime by the Chinese in 1054 AD. The current supernova in the galaxy M82 would also be visible during the daytime were it not for the fact that M82 is over 11 million light-years distant. I last imaged the Crab back in 2011 and at the time created a short animation which shows the expansion of the Crab over a 72 year (1939 – 2011) time span. At the time I calculated that the material was moving away from the center of the supernova at a rate of 1/10th the speed of light! Here’s the link to the expansion animation: http://tinyurl.com/kcqdhum
