Description

Herschel’s Ray is a very small part of the larger Vela supernova remnant in the southern constellation Vela. It’s right around the corner at only 815 light-years distance. John Herschel discovered the supernova remnant at the Cape of Good Hope in 1835. He described it as a “extraordinary long narrow ray of excessively feeble light”.
