Description
A recent night of excellent seeing allowed me to capture what for me is a far-southern deep-sky object, climbing no higher than 18 degrees above the horizon at culmination. NGC 6729 is a combination reflection/emssion nebula in the constellation of Corona Australis. Also known as Caldwell 68, this "molecular complex" is said to be one of the closest star-forming regions of the galaxy at "only" 130 parsecs distant (M42 is almost four times farther away). As a bonus, the ancient and impressive Class VII globular cluster NGC 6723, 8.7 Kpc distant, is also in the field. This is a mildly-processed image with only 40 minutes of luminance data, plus 35 minutes each of red, green, and blue.
