Description

Messier 78 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion (The hunter in Greek mythology) at a distance of 1,600 light-years. Reflection nebulae are the hardest to image from a light polluted urban area such as Huntsville. Unlike emission nebulae you can’t use narrowband filters that remove the sodium (yellow-orange) and mercury (blue) components of street lights. The best way I’ve found is to take many exposures and then integrate the exposures so that the “signal” gradually overcomes the background noise (in this case the noise is light pollution). Another great help is to image right after a weather front has moved though and the sky transparency is at its best. The greater the transparency the less street lights and other sources of light pollution will reflect back from the sky into the telescope. http://owlmountainobservatory.com/
