NGC3628, aka “The Hamburger Galaxy” is 35 million light-years distant in the constellation Leo. Before I compressed the working image into a jpg (415 megabytes down to 1 megabyte) I was able to find about 15 other tiny galaxies in this image. Directly below the center of the galaxy is what appears to be a satellite galaxy which is orbiting NGC3628. This is similar to the large and small Magellanic clouds (or Magellanic spiral galaxies) which are believed to be orbiting out Milky Way. The photons which were collected for this image of NGC3628 were emitted by the billions of stars contained within NGC3628 thirty five million years ago. This was the time period when the Earth was in the middle of the Eocene period when large mammals such as horses first appeared on the North American continent. Kind of mind boggling isn’t it?
