Description

Clouds prevented seeing comet Leonard until 12/19/21. Unfortunately there were still some clouds and much haze near the horizon so it wasn’t possible to see Leonard in the live view screen. To be sure it would be in a frame I decreased the lens focal length to 75mm, 2x or more wider than needed, about 25-deg FOV. The small size of Leonard prevented me from locating it while shooting to then zoom in for a better look. A plane transited a frame so for fun I captured that event. Upon later review on a larger screen I found that not only had my Canon T3i captured the plane and Venus, but also Leonard. Look about 1/4 up from the bottom center of the image and you will find comet Leonard buried in the twilight haze. The frame is at 400iso, f4, 2-seconds exposure with a Canon 75-300mm zoom lens set to 75mm. Venus is distorted due to diffraction around the tree twigs.
