A Photo from the Mediterranean Eclipse
I took in the eclipse with my middle children, Jon and Sarah, and my sweetheart Amy. We viewed it from a chartered boat in the Mediterranean, south of Rhodes. The American charter travel company did not do such a fine job, but the ship's astronomers and officers did wonderful work, putting us right in the center line with clear skies and with only one small sail boat as a neighbor. I had overestimated the difficulties of photographing on board a ship, having anticipated that the Mediterranean in March would be rougher than it was. Hence to maximize FOV I left my 600 mm focal length TV85 home and used instead a 200mm FL Stellarvue F50. I paired this 50 mm spotting scope with a Canon A95 Powershot, shooting through a ScopeTronix MaxView 40 mm eyepiece. I took 15 shots at difffering shutter speeds for the first half minute of the eclipse, then walked away from my rig, picked up binos, stood next to Amy and my two children, and enjoyed the magnificent eclipse, my second total solar (#1, August 11 1999, was viewed between clouds north of Rouen France. We played "Keystone Kops auto chase" to get to that hole in the clouds, but that's a story fo another day). This shot was taken at f/5.6, 1/1250 second, just after the disappearance of the diamond ring. I have two other nice shots which I will post on Astromart in the "StellarVue" forum in a day or so. Right now, it is time for me to go to bed.
