Action urged on asteroids

Astronauts and other space experts are calling for the formation of new international organizations to monitor a threat that may not be as imminent as the current financial crisis but would be even more catastrophic: a cosmic collision with an asteroid or comet.

He's got to be kidding. The UN can't and won't act on anything important. For example, they won't act to stop genocide in several African countries, and they didn't act to stop it in Cambodia. Why would they find the political will to deal with an asteroid.

There should be action, but it will take a major nation or a couple of them acting together to get anything done.

Science is an inappropriate political bedfellow. The appropriate time to discuss preventing a catastrophe is about a week before it hits. Perhaps we can fill a rocket up with bad actors and shoot it at the asteroid. Perhaps Brooks and Dunn can do the theme song.
