Did the Chilean Quake Shift Earth's Axis?
Last month's 8.8 magnitude earthquake in coastal Chile was strong. How strong? NASA scientists say it shifted enough material to change the mass balance of our entire planet and in the process may have shifted the axis of Earth itself. Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California are studying this and belive that the quake may have moved Earth's figure axis by as much as 3 inches (8 cm).
Comments:
So far, everything I have read indicates that recent earthquakes scattered around the world are not related. Maybe true; how do they know for certain?
