I just wanted to say that I agree with the review. I picked my OTA up from the clearance section of Orion for $175.00. It really does not have much false color at all. I have used it at 200X on Saturn with a mid grade 6mm Plossl and the shorty plus 2X barlow. The image held together very well. I have put it on my LXD55 and an Orion Pargon Plus HD with Microstar mount. It worked very well on either due to its relatively light weight and short length.

Though it is not as light as an 80 F5, with the Paragon/Microstar it does very well as my "grab and go" instrument. With it's larger aperture, less color, and ability to use higher magnification, it is a better choice for me than the 80mm all around.

I have 4.5", 8", 10" and 12" newts and a C8 ASGT. I also picked up an Orion 100mm ED recently. The 100mm F/6 gets the most use because of it's convenience and quick setup (in addition to it's very decent views).

Considering the price, I think this is a very nice little telescope, that performs well, and is very portable. In short, it is exactly what I was looking for when I bought it.

Phil P.
I agree about the overall excellent quality of this achromat. For my eyes, Saturn has very little color, though Jupiter (probably because it's so low in the sky compared to Saturn lately), shows enough color to warrant the use of a minus violet filter. I don't need the filter when viewing the moon either. I love the pinpoint star images of open clusters with this little scope. I bought the single axis drive to go along with the astroview mount. It allows me to track and view some bright objects at up to 250x. Polar alignment is easy and objects stay centered for very long periods.
All in all this has been a very good investment for my viewing pleasure.

Jim Phelps

Paul, great review. I am pleased that you are happy with this scope, as I am considering it as an upgrade to my current 90mm short tube refractor for grab and go purposes.

Just clarify things: James MacWilliam is the actual author of the review - I'm just the guy who posted the announcement of this weeks winning review.

-Paul S.
