Flying Telescope Passes Key Test

On Dec. 18th, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), flew in a modified Boeing 747 at 15,000 feet for one hour and 19 minutes.

It Flys! Everybody I know in the aircraft maintenance field worked on that plane in the last 15 yrs. Only cost us at least a billion dollars. Hope everybody did their job right.

Does Sofia open an opportunity for advances in interferometry? The reason I ask is perhaps out of ignorance. It seems as though much interferometry is associated with separation along one or two axies. Does the ability to fly a large orbit offer an opportunity for more precise resolution?
