John L. Dobson 1915-2014

John Dobson, the self-taught stargazer who designed the powerful, inexpensive Dobsonian telescope, died January 15, 2014 at a hospital in Burbank, California. He was 98. His death was confirmed by the Burbank chapter of Sidewalk Astronomers, an international organization that John Dobson helped found in 1968. John Dobson was arguably the most influential person in amateur astronomy in the last 30 years. He almost single-handedly revolutionized amateur astronomy by making deep space accessible to millions. Through his free star parties and slide shows, he encouraged both young and old to think about the Universe and observe its beauty with their own eyes.

I had not heard about John Dobson passing away. I was fortunate enough to meet him at one of the San Antonio Astronomy Club meetings a few years ago. I had no idea of his age, he seemed very young at heart for a person over 90 years even back then. Super person and loved to see others enjoy the astronomy hobby, another amateur astronomer passing, so sorry to hear, rest in peace John Dobson, your scopes will continue to show us the light of the universe!

I had the pleasure of meeting John Dobson a few years ago in Mesa Arizona, at which time he autographed my Dobson mount. A nice man, he will be missed

John Dobson is a founding father of a design so popular that the word "Newtonian" has been replaced with "Dobson" by his ultra simple Alt-Azimuth mount. He did his thing, using ship port hole glass and not being worried about elegance but concerned about size. His famous saying that " The Universe is made up of mostly Nitrogen and Ignorance " is one of my favorites.
Thank you, Mr. Dobson, you are a legend and a hero.
Pete Hallock
Orcutt, California
