Major Extra-Solar Discovery Announcement Scheduled August 31

A team of planet-hunters will announce their discovery of a new class of planets beyond our solar system at a NASA Science Update at 1 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, August 31. Their discovery represents a significant and much-anticipated advance in the hunt for extra-solar planets.

This sounds like a major biological expedition that could make Hubble, Voyager, etc. pale by comparison if it produces results. It would be wonderful to confirm life on another planetary system.<br><br>OTOH, it may never come to pass, as obviously NASA is staging this for publicity purposes and probably has to beg money from congress for the program. What a shame that we can give $70 billion/year in tax breaks to offshore US corporations, spend $150 billion/year to wage a war in Iraq, and give $55 billion/year in tax breaks to the top 1% fat cats, while NASA (with an annual budget of $16 billion) has to beg for funding for a project of this magnitude and significance.
