Pan-STARRS Asteroid Hunter is Now Fully Operational

Astronomers have announced that the first Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System) observatory, PS1, is fully operational. This innovative facility will be at the front line of Earth's defense by searching for "killer" asteroids and comets. Pan-STARRS features the world's largest digital camera -- a 1.4 Gigapixel monster. Each image, if printed out as a 300-dpi photograph, would cover half a basketball court. Pan-STARRS will map one-sixth of the sky every month. Frequent follow-up observations will allow astronomers to track suspicious objects and calculate their orbits, identifying any potential threats to Earth.

A good use for our astronomic buck! Rather that than putting people on Mars.

Jud
