Space-based solar plant gets go-ahead

California regulators have given the go-ahead to a project to beam solar energy from space.

Comments:

Just a thought..... what will this do to light pollution for that area?

Maurice
Forget light pollution; if this catches on we will have man-made obstructions to deal with. What's next, space based billboards?

n2s

“Power will be transmitted via radio frequency energy to a ground station in California." That sounds like a pretty powerful radio beam. What if the aiming mechanism goes awry?

And, what happens when a bird or stray aircraft flies though this concentrated micro wave beam? Fireworks, anyone? 8O

we need to start somewhere. if it means screwed up skies, that suks but again we gotta start somewhere.

just imagine: a disc with cross-section of the earth's diameter in solar-synchronous orbit beaming energy to us down here. or whereever. perhaps we could create another planet with all the energy. afterall, all that goes on here is due to solar energy hit the earth.
plus dark skies as it'd be along side us.
