The Coolest Stars are Not All in Hollywood

Astronomers have uncovered what appear to be 14 of the coolest stars known in our universe. These failed stars, called brown dwarfs, are so cold and faint that they'd be impossible to see with current visible-light telescopes. Spitzer's infrared vision was able to pick out their feeble glow, much as a firefighter uses infrared goggles to find hot spots buried underneath a dark forest floor.

Comments:

If these brown dwarfs are stars, then so am I. I too am made of matter, and I radiate in infrared.

perhaps, but the gravity you generate is negligible...

Must they all be 'failed stars', stars that never got massive enough to ignite fusion? Couldn't some be end-of-life dead stars that have lost most of their heat? Would collapsed degenerate stars ever cool to this level?
