The End of an Era -- Lights Out for the Tevatron

Tevatron, the second most powerful particle accelerator in the world, surpassed only by the Large Hadron Collider, will cease operations due to budgetary constraints. Fermilab Director Pier Oddone announced that the Tevatron will shut down in the end of September 2011. The present budgetary climate did not permit the Department of Energy to secure the additional funds needed to run the Tevatron. And with that, it is the end of the line for this legendary machine.

And so continues the passage of physics back into European hands. Sigh.

I've got a bunch of friends who work there. They've been scrambling like mad to produce tons of good science for the last few years, with the sword of CERN hanging over their head. Who knows, they may yet find the Higgs boson and generate enough hype to get re-funded.

Your friends intellectual capability and desire to serve has been taken for granted while at the same time our Federal Government will spend billions more to "make the scientific community more relevent in this country". It 's all bull crap andwishful thinking.

I plan on following the Chinese manned Moon and Mars program. Be certain that shortly after the Webb Telescope reaches it's perch in space, the arguments to abandon it will begin - and eventually win. At some point our hamburger nation will become the joke that is Great Britain and France.

Since I own a electronics recycling company, I should go there and get some equipment. If anyone knows who I should contact - throw me a line.

Phil
